Golden Stoneflies are known to deposit their eggs by skating across the water and using the surface tension to drag the eggs off their abdomen. Foam sighter on the top for easy sighting through rough water. Rubber legs extending off the sides. Big, bulky wings for extra buoyancy.

This micro bugger was inspired by competition fly anglers that used small, heavily weighted streamers to jig across deep pools and pockets. Surprisingly, these flies are incredibly effective when dead drifted or euro-nymphed through runs. The heavy tungsten bead coupled with the simple profile allows this streamer to dive fast and get keep into the feeding zones. Its flashy body grabs attention as it reflects sunlight deep in pockets of water while the marabou tail sparks movement.

Walt’s worm is one of the most productive freestone flies out there. It has that rough-around-the-edges look that mountain trout cannot resist! While it can imitate everything from a mayfly larva to a caddis pupa, it’s a great generic attractor to fish in a multiple fly rig. In fact, on a new stream or one with limited hatches, a good setup can be a midge nymph with walt’s worm trailing 12-inches behind.

Use a thicker leader and tippet 1x to 3x not just for fighting larger fish, but because thicker lines help cast these heavy flies more accurately. Brood X is expected to be its most dense late May into June. It will eventually fizzle out in July, however, trout will recognize these flies late into the summer and opportunistically take them.

Can You Dry Fly with a Euro Rig?

Tailwater trout are notorious for being picky. They’ll turn their nose up at a pattern that’s a size or color shade different from the naturals floating by. Few attractor patterns fool these wily critters, but that doesn’t hold true for the Frenchie! It’s the perfect combination of thick, scruffy body and subdued profile to limit the disturbance it makes in the water. A favorite way to fish it is at the point of a three-fly nymph rig.

HEADHUNTERS SAYS This is an older tailwater pattern that still puts lots of fish in the net. Glass beads are very effective at certain times, and this
